v1.1.0

v1.1.0 is a housekeeping release. Nothing here changes what Flashback is for, but a lot of it changes whether the app behaves the way you expect when you pick it up. Most of these came from people shooting with it in places we hadn’t, on phones we don’t own.

Software Mode looks like the hardware

The biggest fix in here is one you’ll notice straight away if you switch between the two modes. Software Mode’s rendering has been rebuilt to track what the real sensor does, so a scene shot on your phone’s camera and the same scene shot through a Game Boy Camera cartridge finally land in the same place. Auto exposure no longer drifts depending on which palette you have loaded, and it settles far faster on startup instead of walking up to the right brightness while you wait.

Dither and Grain also behave properly now. Grain drives the dither pattern the way it always should have, and setting Dither to None no longer darkens the whole image.

Camera Control

On iPhones with the Camera Control button, a press now takes a shot in Software Mode too, not just with an Operator attached.

Fixes

• Black viewfinder on a cold start. On some devices the camera screen came up black on the first launch after a reboot. Fixed.
• Front camera rotation. The front camera now takes its orientation from the system rotation coordinator, so selfies aren’t sideways on devices that report it differently.
• Returning to the app. The mode switch, the recording pill and the shutter all come back correctly now when you return from the background, instead of occasionally showing a stale state.
• Gallery. The corner preview refreshes after you delete a shot, and it can’t be tapped while recording or when there’s nothing to open yet.
• Saving. Recorded video saves reliably, gallery saving works again on Android 12 and below, and iOS asks for the level of Photos access it actually needs.
• Text size. The app no longer scales with the system font setting, so layouts stay as designed.
• Controls. A larger hit area on the drawer caret, no more animation lag when it opens, and the option picker stays put when its list gets shorter.
• Android. Plugging in an Operator no longer forces Flashback open.

Crashes

A handful of crashes are gone: a camera disabled by device policy or by the privacy toggle now shows an explanation instead of taking the app down, a failed camera stream configuration is handled rather than fatal, and a drawing crash while fading the record and shutter controls has been fixed.

Flashback updates automatically through the App Store and Google Play. Keep the reports coming. Almost everything in this release started as an email from someone who ran into it.
