Mission

Preserve Gaming History

Who We Are

We build hardware and software that lets you play your old cartridges on modern PCs. No piracy - just your games, your saves, your memories.

Started in 2019 in Bucharest after watching too many save batteries die and childhood memories fade. We figured there had to be a better way to keep these games alive.

Every Operator we make is built around three ideas: Play (your cartridges on the big screen), Preserve (back up saves before the battery dies), and Develop (test your own homebrew on real hardware).

What Every Operator Does

Play

Experience your cartridges on big screens with modern controllers. Powered by respected emulation cores (mGBA, bsnes) for pixel-perfect accuracy.

Preserve

Never lose precious save files to dying batteries. Create personal archives of games you own with seamless save synchronization.

Develop

Test your own game creations on original hardware. Join the creative retro community with development tools like GB Studio.

Story Angles

1. The Preservation Powerhouse

A digital guardian for your physical collection - focus on archiving, preserving and safekeeping entire childhood Pokémon teams, old Game Boy Camera photos of loved ones or anything in between. With plug-and-play functionality and our intuitive Playback software, it doesn't get any simpler than this!

2. Best of Both Worlds

Switch seamlessly between your original console and the Operator. Enjoy the nostalgia of a retro device, and also the modern comforts of playing on a big screen with a Bluetooth controller. With the Operator's transparent design as a nod to the original's impeccable taste, it looks as good on your shelf as it does in action.

3. Solving a 30-Year-Old Problem

Few things are riskier than still relying exclusively on the original game battery, as it nears its 20-30 year shelf life expectancy. Bridging the gap between physical retro games and digital storage on modern PCs, the Operator protects your save data while you replace the aging battery and give your cartridge a second chance at life.

4. A Global Phenomenon with Humble Beginnings

Bursting on the retro gaming scene in January 2021, GB Operator is the brainchild of two young Romanian entrepreneurs. It took shape during a global pandemic, while stuck in a studio apartment on the edge of Bucharest, same place where the first units would later be assembled by hand, with help from friends and family. The wild success story that followed brought Operators to customers across 97+ countries, defying all odds which are often stacked against bootstrapped start-ups.
