v1.2.1 is a cleanup release. History shipped in v1.2.0 and got used harder than we had tested it, mostly on Android phones we don’t have on the desk, and a handful of rough edges turned up quickly. Nothing here is new, it’s all things that should have worked the first time.

History looks right on narrow phones

On narrower Android screens the four prices in a history row ran into each other, so the loose cartridge figure sat on top of the complete in box one and neither was readable. The columns now share the space properly and each price shortens on its own if it has to, instead of one long figure dragging the rest down with it.

Cover art in the list got the same treatment. The coloured block behind each thumbnail was always square, which left thick bands of colour down the sides of tall box art. It now follows the shape of the artwork.

Connecting is less fussy

Plug an Operator in while you’re looking at History, and coming back would leave you staring at the “Plug in your Operator” screen with a device already attached. Unplugging and plugging in again was the only way out. Retrace now re-checks for the device whenever a screen comes back into view.

Short screens were a problem too. On phones without much height the device photo overlapped the heading. That screen scrolls now when there isn’t room for everything, and stays exactly as it was when there is.

Smaller fixes

• The right device name. The connect screen told iPad owners to plug into their iPhone, and Android tablet owners to plug into their phone. It now says iPad where it should, and something sensibly generic elsewhere.
• Honest pricing labels. A cartridge with pricing data that was present but empty showed four dashes above a line about US regional prices. It now says pricing data is unavailable, which is what it means.
• No crash on unknown hardware. An Operator the app doesn’t recognise no longer takes the connected screen down with it.

Behind the scenes

Every analysis was reading the cartridge twice, once to check something was there and again to actually do the work. Each of those is a round trip over USB, so results now appear a little sooner, and there’s no longer a window where the cartridge could be swapped between the two reads and give you a result for the wrong game.

Retrace updates automatically through the App Store and Google Play. Keep sending the screenshots, most of this release came from them.
